Confession of a Nurse from University Hospital of Northern British Columbia

I am a registered nurse at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia. At my work I see people live, get better and other die or have already passed in horrible ways. I see people smile, cry, and depressed for many reasons. Sometimes they make news, you read about them on the Prince George Citizen, or watch them on CKPG news. These are always in the news and I find myself sometimes visiting these sites to see what others are doing. I know that these people were loved or are loved. I sometimes think that they had so much more to live for than I do and wish I could trade their places. I wish I was not so lonely. I wish I could do more with my life.

The fact you are a Nurse speaks volumes about your character.

There is not much more you can do except to keep doing what you are doing.
I am proud of the work that people like you do at the hospital.
Last week I helped put on a fundraiser for the hospital because I felt the same way as you do.

I have a lot of experience with feeling lonely, it has been the predominate feeling of my life and for the 1st time in my life I am feeling what it feels like not to be so lonely. KEEP HOPE UP you never know where life is taking you. Life can change on a dime.

If being a nurse doesn’t fulfill you it’s ok to get another job…or get a hobby. My super secret hobby is Burlesque. In burlesque you choose a stage name (so you’re anonymous!) & I get to go onstage & be wild & crazy & it makes me feel less lonely.

It’s lovely when you connect with people over something “weird.” I love finding the mutuality that exists between me & the audience, it’s the only time I connect to other people- we all are fucking weird & crazy on the inside is my theory, and once you make peace with what you once called “ugly” you’ll be amazed at the beauty that lies beneath.

Please seek that which satisfies you. It’s a trial & error process but the more you do it the more you’ll be happy. I promise there is a community for you somewhere.

i hope that my advice above wasn’t annoying… bottom line: I see value in you after only reading what you wrote on this website. I had to click on your name b/c I wanted to know you better.

It sounds like you may be formulating your “life question.” This is uber important step in life.

PS- maybe part of your value is showing the patients you see THEIR value. While their value may be clear to you it’s highly likely that (just like you) they can’t see their own value.

I also recommend the book “Strengths Finder 2.0” seriously go buy it right now ($20 to $25 dollars) take the timed quiz online & read about what you do best. This book was a turning point for my life: I quit focusing on improving my weaknesses so much & began focusing on improving my strengths. It’s amazing how this tiny shift in thinking can change your life.
